Charlie Chaplin is king of comedy.Charlie Chaplin was born in London, England on 16 April 1889. His parents Sr and Hannah Hill were music hall entertainers but separated shortly after Charlie was born,leaving Hannah to provide for her children.In 1896 when Hannah was no longer able to care for her children,Charlie and his brother Sydney were admitted to Lambeth Workhouse and later,Hanwell School for Orphans and Destitute Children.
In 1921 Chaplin was decorated by the French government for his outstanding work as a filmmaker,and was given the rank of Officer of the Legion of Honor in 1952.In 1972 he was honored with an Academy Award for his “incalculable effect in making motion pictures the art form of the century.” In 1975 England’s Queen Elizabeth II knighted him.Chaplin died of natural causes on December 25, 1977 at his home in Switzerland.
